SMEC, in joint venture with another consultant is the lead consultant designer (roads, structures, environmental) for the 40-kilometre, four lane Westlink M7 Motorway (formerly known as the WSO: Western Sydney Orbital). The A$1.5 billion project will link the M5 Motorway in the south-west of Sydney with the M4 in the centre-west and the M2 Mororway in the North.  Abigroup and Leighton Contractors have formed a Joint Venture (ALJV) for the contruction of the M7 and SMEC consults to the construction JV .

The Westlink M7 is Australia’s largest urban road project and is often referred to as a “missing link” in Sydney’s orbital motorway network.  The route includes seventeen interchanges and over 160 bridges. Also included is a shared cycleway/pedestrian path for the whole of the length which connects with paths and cycleways along the route. Design  commenced early in 2003 and is now essentially completed. Construction is well underway and ahead of the Year 2007 formal date for opening. SMEC continues to have a significant role providing construction surveillance support to ALJV.
