PROJECT PLANNING FOR TOURISM (1993) Client: Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Planning and delivery of a course in project planning, monitoring and evaluation for district tourism officers with the objective to improve their skills in the theory and practice of good planning techniques as they apply to secondary tourism projects, and to extend the participants knowledge and understanding of the issues involved in ecotourism and cultural tourism. REWA RIVER - NUMERICAL FLOOD MODELLING (1990) Client: Food and Agriculture Organisation Assessment of available data and advice on data requirements for the installation and application of catchment hydrologic model and flood numerical model for the Rewa River. CYCLONE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT (1987) Client: Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Technical assistance to Fijian authorities for reconstruction work for houses, school buildings, teachers' accommodation, seawalls and other small projects following cyclone damage in approximately 60 villages throughout the Northern and Eastern Divisions. Services included assessment and reporting on damages and rehabilitation costs, recommendations for training and further assistance, and investigation of cyclone resistance design improvements for low-rise concrete and timber buildings. Services also included monitoring building material supplies, progress and expenditure, and preparation of survey and construction guidelines for building supervisors. MONASUVA HYDROELECTRIC SCHEME (1982-1983) Client: Barclay Bros Appraisal of technical alternatives for pressure shaft and advice during construction of penstock shaft. YALAVOU BEEF CATTLE PROJECT/YALAVOU RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (1975-1983)
The project involved the development of approximately 25 000 ha of previously unproductive land in the Sigatoka River Valley, and included the construction of access roads as well as the procurement of required road plant. Initially, as part of the project feasibility study, SMEC carried out road location and engineering estimates for the road development component. Subsequently, SMEC's services included the specification, procurement, inspection and delivery of earthmoving plant and equipment, detailed engineering for location and design of a 104 km system of rural service and access roads, and supervision of the road works and equipment maintenance repair. Construction works also included culverts and low-level reinforced concrete bridges, small dams and the preparation of building sites on farms. In addition reconstruction of sections of roads and some stream crossings was necessary following cyclones in 1981, 1982 and 1983. MONASUVA PROJECT - POWER STATION MODEL STUDIES (1982) Client: Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners, Australia Model studies of possible surging and instability in the tailrace conduit of the proposed Wailoa Power Station. VANUA LEVU ENERGY STUDY (1982) Client: Fiji Electricity Authority Prefeasibility study, in association with Shedden Pacific Pty Limited, of future electricity requirements and supply options to the centres of Labasa and Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu. The study included examination of the use of sugar-cane waste, forest waste, and timber milling waste, and the installation of mini hydro units as a means of reducing the present dependence on imported oil for the production of electric power. MONASAVU DAM PROJECT, INSTRUMENTATION (1980-1982) Client: Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners, Australia Supervision of the installation of measuring instruments in the Monasavu Dam and the training of local personnel in the operation and reading of the instruments. MONASAVU DAM PROJECT, SPILLWAY MODEL STUDY (1979-1982) Client: Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners, Australia Hydraulic model studies to examine approach and spillway chute flow conditions for the proposed Monasavu Dam, and generally ensure safe operation during floods. NADI-LAUTOKA WATER SUPPLY (1980-1981) Client: Leighton Contractors Assistance with geomechanics and design problems encountered with the outlet structure. NAMOSI COPPER PROJECT, HYDROLOGIC STUDY (1978-1979) Client: Vita Copper Ltd Hydrologic studies associated with the investigation of the Namosi Copper Project including a review of the available hydrologic and meteorologic data and a survey of the area, design of a small network of hydrometric and meteorologic stations, procurement of instrumentation, and data collection, processing and analysis for preliminary estimation of hydrologic design parameters. |
