HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS FOR EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT TRAINING PROJECT (1997)

Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Workplace assessment of the Plant and Vehicle Unit of the Ministry of Works and Energy, and the subsequent preparation and delivery of a 2-week hands-on training course in Hydraulic Systems for Earthmoving Equipment.  Services also included procurement of specialised equipment for use in the course and for retention by the Plant and Vehicle Unit.

SUPERVISION TRAINING PROJECT (1996)

Client:  Telecom Services Kiribati Ltd

Design and conduct of a training program in management principles aimed at strengthening the managerial skills of the organisation's frontline supervisors and middle managers. The program consisted of 2 courses each of 5 days duration. Services also included advice on the implementation of a post-training program incorporating principles and skills acquired.

TABITEUEA ATOLL LINKAGES PROJECT (1993-1996)

Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Managing Agent with responsibility for all aspects of the construction and upgrading of linkages between adjacent islands of the Tabiteuea Atoll with the objective of improving the quality of life of the local communities.  The project, undertaken in 3 phases, involved environmental, socio-economic and coastal engineering studies, detailed design, construction and coastal monitoring.  Construction works included 2 new earthfill causeways, 2 new timber pedestrian crossings, and the rehabilitation of 5 existing causeways.  Other services provided by SMEC included the evaluation of existing construction plant, specification and procurement of additional plant and equipment, establishment of workshop and provision of services for the repair/maintenance of plant and equipment, and flume testing (physical scale model) of causeway structures under various wave conditions.

BIKENIBEU POWER STATION GENERATING SETS (1992-1995)

Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Provision of technical advisory services, under SMEC's period contract for the Commodities Assistance Program - Pacific Island Countries, for the procurement, specification and supervision of reconditioning, installation, and commissioning of 2 diesel generating sets, including electrical motor control board, high voltage switchboard, and substation . Services also included detailed design for the fuel, lubrication, cooling water and electrical control systems.

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM STABILITY STUDY (1994)

Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Provision of technical advisory services, under SMEC's period contract for the Commodities Assistance Program - Pacific Island Countries, involving investigation of an 11 kV underground cable connecting the Betio and Bikenibeu diesel power stations on Tarawa, investigation of possible causes of instability in the distribution system, and system performance testing, analysis and recommendations.

SOUTH TARAWA ENVIRONMENTAL RECYCLING PROJECT FEASIBILITY STUDY (1994)

Client:  Commission of the European Communities

Provision of an Equipment Specialist to undertake a study to determine the most appropriate type of equipment to collect and process for recycling the large quantity of abandoned vehicles and machinery on South Tarawa. Services included the survey and categorisation of the waste material, preparation of documentation and cost estimates for the design, specification and supply of the collection/processing equipment, determination of market for sale of recycled material, and recommendations for technical assistance and training requirements for implementation of the project.

UPGRADING OF ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION GRID PROJECT (1993-1994)

Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Provision of technical advisory services, under SMEC's period contract for the Commodities Assistance Program - Pacific Island Countries, for the upgrading of the electrical distribution grid on Kiritimati. Services entailed the determination of status of equipment at an existing diesel power station, investigation and costing for the upgrading of the existing distribution system and expansion of the generation system to achieve adequate standards of supply, and establishment of economic viability of the expansion works.

TARAWA WATER RETICULATION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (1989)


Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Planning and design of improvements and modifications to the Tarawa fresh water reticulation system, involving the excavation of existing pipe and replacement with approximately 100 km new pipe, as well as extension of the system.  Services included supervision of construction by day-labour staff and contracts, and the procurement of pipeline, fittings and other construction materials to the value of $ 1.2 million, including quality assurance and shipping to Kiribati.

APPRAISAL MISSION (1987)

Client:  Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)/British Development Division of the Pacific

Participation in a joint mission to review the Kiribati Housing Corporation, public housing stock and government housing policy for assessment of possible donor aid.
