 KAVIENG FISHERIES PORT (2002-2004)

Client: Nawae Constructions/National Fisheries Authority/Asian Development Bank

Coastal engineering investigations, preliminary and detailed design, followed by construction advice and supervision, for the development of a new fisheries port, comprising 2 jetties with associated facilities, in New Ireland Province. The main jetty comprises a 40 m long approach structure and a 60 m jetty, both 8m in width, to serve tuna fishing vessels up to 25 m in length and 300 tonne displacement. The second jetty comprises a 20 m long approach structure and a 25 m long jetty, both 4 m in width, mainly to serve local banana boats.

SMEC International are providing the services as an associate of SMEC PNG Ltd, the local lead consultant retained by the Contractor as design partner in a design and construct contract for the development of the port.

LAE PORT STUDY (2001)

Client: Papua New Guinea Harbours Board

Maritime, coastal and geotechnical investigations into the failure of port infrastructure including wharf structures and hardstand area as a result of slope movements beneath the port, and development and preliminary design of a range of options for the repair/alleviation work based on a 20-year planning horizon. Services also included financial assessments, cost estimates, port planning and provision of on-the-job training to Harbours Board personnel.

The assignment was undertaken in an association with SMEC PNG Ltd, the local lead consultant.

PORT MORESBY PORT RELOCATION STUDY REPORT ASSESSMENT (2000)

Client: Papua New Guinea Harbours Board

Independent technical assessment of the Port Moresby Port Relocation Study conducted by Tong Woo Engineering Construction Company. The assessment included a review of the original Terms of Reference and an assessment of completeness and adequacy, as well as an assessment of a variation claim submitted by Tong Woo Construction Company to the Harbours Board.

FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (1999-2000)

Client: Gillet, Preston and Associates Inc/Asian Development Bank

SMEC was engaged by the prime consultant to provide the Wharf Engineering Specialist for the wharf development component of a project aimed at increasing the economic contribution made by fisheries to the PNG economy on a sustainable basis with a focus on the commercial sector.

Services included an assessment of current and future requirements for berthing and mooring of domestic fishing vessels at Port Moresby and Madang, assessment of the existing facilities, provision of expert advice on technical and operational suitability of proposed wharf sites and assessment of their capacity, provision of conceptual alternative wharf designs and arrangements, and technical oversight of the tendering and contracting process.
