In September the Western
Australian Division of the Institution of Engineers Australia nominated the
Perth Main Sewer 3 Rehabilitation Project as winner of its excellence award for
2002 in the Infrastructure and Building category.
 SMEC provided design and project management services to the Water Corporation
of Western Australia for the replacement of Section 3 of the main sewer in the
city of Perth. The project involved replacement of the existing sewer with a
1450 metre bored tunnel of 2.1 metre diameter, with minimal disruption to the
urban population living above. The project represented the first use of an Earth
Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine in Perth sands.
SMEC Australia Pty Ltd and its associate Transfield Tunnelling were joint
winners of the award.
