People SMEC is above all a community of people whose
efforts are organised through the corporate structure to provide diverse
professional services to a wide range of client organisations in both the
public and private sectors in Australia and throughout the Asia-Pacific
region. The quality of SMEC's services is driven by our 800 staff - by
their skills, experience and commitment to successful outcomes.
SMEC is a very stable employer and many of our staff have been with the
company for most of their working lives. This gives SMEC a strong corporate
culture and a depth of experience in both technical disciplines and the
particular needs of specific geographical areas. The range of skills contained
within SMEC has been expanding and developing virtually since the company was
established in 1970. Engineering has always been central to SMEC's operations,
but the company now includes professional in the social sciences, environmental
science, urban planning and organisational development. The emphasis of SMEC
management is on building a diverse technical base into a series of
multidisciplinary teams with the co-operation and mutual understanding necessary
to approach complex problems from a variety of professional perspectives.
SMEC is above all a development company. Our role is to assist urban and
rural areas of Australia and around the world to create the infrastructure and
institutional capacity necessary to generate wealth and employment while
conserving the natural world on which all life depends. SMEC staff regard
themselves as development professionals with particular expertise which can
assist organisations realise their development potential and their national or
regional objectives. SMEC has the largest international portfolio of projects of
any comparable Australian company and many of our staff are attracted to SMEC
because they wish to contribute to development in less affluent countries,
particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
SMEC has always been especially well regarded for the quality of its
training. The company undertakes practical training courses in technical and
professional disciplines, project management or contract administration in
Australia and many other countries. Many senior decision-makers in Asian or
Pacific countries were trained in part by SMEC in the early stages of their
careers. This long track record reflects the effectiveness of our staff in
cross-cultural environments.
During the 30 years of the company's existence several thousand people have
worked for SMEC as permanent or contract staff. Most of these people look back
fondly on their experiences with the company, the people they worked with as
colleagues or clients and the communities among which they lived in
institutions, and the social and economic impact made by their work. SMEC is
very proud of its former staff and the contribution they have made to the growth
of the company and its reputation. SMEC has assisted with staff reunions in
recent years to ensure that former staff can maintain contact with colleagues
