SMEC has always been well known in Australian industry as a major training ground for young professionals in engineering, project management, feasibility analysis and project appraisal and planning. Today we still perform this function, not just in engineering but in environmental science, urban planning and design and social infrastructure. SMEC seeks to attract the best graduates from Australian universities and give them the practical experience and guidance they need to realise their professional potential. SMEC's large portfolio of international work means that many graduates seek out SMEC because they wish to develop a career in international development. SMEC's traditional educational role is now being performed increasingly in our offices and subsidiaries around the world as well. We offer more and more opportunities to graduates in India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and many other countries to develop their skills in a major international company and to work with SMEC in Australia and in other parts of the world from Africa and the Gulf through Asia to the Pacific Islands. This educational role is not just about succession planning within the SMEC Group to ensure that the staff who will lead the company in the future are equipped with the skills and experience they will one day need. It is also linked closely with SMEC's notion of the quality of the service we provide to clients. We want to combine in all our operations the enthusiasm, imagination and initiative of younger people with the experience and wisdom of our more established staff members. This combination helps us to provide innovative but practical solutions to technical, economic and social problems whose complexity continues to grow. Providing these solutions is SMEC's business. |
