During the past century countless billions of dollars have been invested in the built environment around the world. The scale of this investment by owners and the community at large necessitates measures to maximise the commercial, economic and social return derived from the asset base. This can be done through a number of mechanisms including:

  • whole of life costing techniques
  • optimal maintenance scheduling
  • timing of major refurbishments

Asset management systems transcend public and private sector divisions. Private companies need to demonstrate to shareholders that their assets are being utilised to best effect and public sector agencies must operate increasingly in a market-oriented environment. More effective asset management is therefore closely associated with commercialisation of government entities and privatisation of state-owned assets and organisations. SMEC's historical evolution makes its expertise especially relevant to state-owned enterprises engaging with the commercial marketplace.
