The effectiveness of systems of physical or social infrastructure is dependent on the quality of their design. Design is a generic skill capable of being applied across many different disciplines, but in essence it involves devising cost-effective forms, structures and processes which permit human beings to achieve given objectives. Problem solving begins with a combination of analysis and design.

Good design depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • understanding of the practicalities of technology and its potential applications
  • imagination and creativity necessary to develop solutions for new problems and circumstances
  • understanding of client needs and constraints.

SMEC has always been in large part a design company with a practical approach derived from experience in the implementation of concepts. This has been recognised by SMEC's consistent inclusion over many years in the list of the 200 leading international design firms issued by the US publication Engineering News Record. SMEC seeks to create a professional environment in which creativity, innovation and the imaginative use of modern technology can flourish.
