Basically, it is a question of balance. Development must continue; people have a right to food and shelter and, where resources allow, to an improved quality of life. But if ecosystems are to be preserved, the focus of future development must be on its ecological sustainability. Economic incentives alone are insufficient. Social and environmental factors also need to be considered, as does the careful use of resources.
Ecologically sustainable development requires effective environmental management and planning. Such input enables governments, industries and individuals to understand better the vital relationship between people and the world in which they live. It also provides the means to manage that relationship more responsibly. |
