SMEC has particular expertise in the specialised process of procurement of goods for international aid programs.

During the past 30 years SMEC has managed major aid projects in energy, transport and water supply in more than 50 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the South Pacific. This has involved the purchase and supply of goods ranging from large items of capital equipment to the vast array of materials required to maintain a project community in the field.

For nearly a decade SMEC managed the Commodity Assistance Program (CASP) on behalf of AusAID. This involved the purchase and delivery of a wide range of goods for selected countries in the South Pacific and South East Asia.

SMEC's aid-related experience includes:

  • Identification of robust, low maintenance goods suited to developing country conditions, especially in rural areas
  • Logistics of supply to remote locations or using irregular transport services
  • Secure and robust packaging
  • Training and technical assistance in purchasing procedures and management.
