Established in Australia and overseas…
Since formation in 1970, SMEC has grown through consistent quality service to
become recognised as a consultant of choice by transportation authorities in
Australia and overseas, by funding agencies, and throughout the construction and
development industries not only in Australia, but in some 65 other countries.
SMEC has offices in every Australian state. The head office for international
highways and transportation projects is in Cooma, New South Wales and many of
the project management functions are handled through regional offices in major
cities around the world including, Beijing, Delhi, Dhaka, Dubai, Hanoi, Jakarta,
Kuala Lumpur or through smaller country offices such as those in Almaty, Lahore,
Manila, or Phnom Penh. Typically overseas project offices are set up for each
assignment, manned by a team of expatriate specialists who manage and train
local counterpart professional and administrative staff.
SMEC has in excess of 250 engineers and professional staff working in
Australia and 120 expatriates in the field overseas. Positions are constantly
available and SMEC welcomes the submission of new CVs.

Australia, Pacific
Motorway,Queensland, Detailed design of 11.3km of 8-lane motorway
including four grade separated interchanges, six road and river bridges,
creek crossings and service road network followed by construction
administration of a new 17km section of 8-lane motorway incorporating
interchanges, service roads, 5 major bridges (up to 120m in length) and
electronic traffic control equipment and lighting, through a sensitive
environmental area.

Australia, Pacific Highway
Bulahdelah to Coolongolook Deviation, NSW, Design of a 22km section of
4-lane dual carriageway to eliminate an existing section with sharp bends,
poor horizontal alignment and a high rate of accidents. Project involved
4-million cub.m. earthworks, 400,000cub.m. concrete pavement, 8 bridges,
underpasses, intersections, drainage works, lighting and landscaping.

Australia, Crafers
Highway, SA. Superintendent and Superintendent's Representative for
construction of 8.3km of twin 3-lane carriageways including twin 500m
tunnels, 2 major bridges, underpasses, and drainage.

Australia, Pacific
Highway, Raleigh Deviation, NSW, Contract administration and
construction supervision for 7km 4-lane dual carriageway involving
900,000cub.m earthworks, 250cub.m asphaltic concrete pavement, 6 bridges (to
264m long), interchanges, drainage, street lighting, and guardrails. A
substantial portion was over weak unconsolidated clay.

Bangladesh, Second Rural
Roads and Markets Improvement and Maintenance Project, Project
management for improvement and upgrading of 574km of feeder roads to all
weather bitumen standard and construction of some 23,000m of drainage
structures, periodic maintenance of 747km of roads and 13000m of bridges and
culverts, improvement to 136 markets and 41 landing stages on rural
waterways, procurement of equipment, institutional strengthening, and
training.

Botswana,Francistown-Matsiloje
Road Project, Feasibility and design studies followed by
pre-construction and construction supervision services for 43.5 km 2-lane 2
coat bitumen seal road including site investigations, preparation of tender
documents, design review, assisting in tender procedures and construction
supervision

China PRC, National
Highway II Project, Xiaotang -Gantang Expressway, Project management and
assistance in construction supervision for 109km 4-lane fully access
controlled toll expressway incorporating 42 bridges totalling 11.7km and 15
tunnels totalling 13.9km, 6 interchanges, 21 grade separations, toll
stations, management and service facilities.

India, Institutional
Strengthening of the National Highways Authority, Review of the
functions and operations of the NHAI, constituted in 1994 to provide
planning, programming, and policies with respect to design, construction and
maintenance of all National Highways in India.

India, Andhra Pradesh
State Highways Project, Design and contract documentation of 1000km of
State Highways, assistance in procurement and assessment of contractors,
advisers to the Project Implementation Unit for co-ordinating multiple
contract supervision consultants, reporting, institutional strengthening,
programmed maintenance, and training.

Malawi, Road Maintenance
and Rehabilitation Program- Review of the Government's proposed roads
projects giving consideration to technical and economic feasibility in view
of the availability of human and financial resources. A 5-year maintenance
and rehabilitation programme was developed.

Nepal, Road Maintenance
and Design Project, Feasibility studies, design and construction
supervision of some 700km of mountain roads throughout Nepal including
upgrading of tracks to two lane all weather construction, programmed
maintenance, and training of contractors and counterpart staff.

Pakistan, Lahore Islamabad
Motorway, Contract Management, design review, construction supervision,
and counterpart staff training for 339km 6-lane divided, controlled access
motorway including interchanges, toll and service facilities, more than 250
bridges and culverts. Three bridges between 500 and 1000m in length.

Vanuatu, Urban
Infrastructure Project Improvement and rehabilitation of urban
infrastructure in Port Vila and Luganville aimed at both improved economic
growth and improved living standards. The scope of works included
improvements to water supply and drainage; replacement of an existing
causeway with a new bridge; traffic planning and intersection improvement;
road rehabilitation; and wharf rehabilitation

Vietnam, Rural Transport
Project, Project advisor for the rehabilitation and improvement of
5000km of rural roads and bridges in 18 districts, development of an
effective road maintenance programme, resettlement of project effected
people, and training.

Yemen PDR, Transport
Rehabilitation Project Provision of technical assistance for the
establishment of the Yemen Board for Management of the Road Maintenance
Fund, including development of operating alternatives, preparation of an
