SMEC has an excellent record of project management and water supply and sanitation form a major focus of its activities. Over time SMEC has progressively integrated its traditional core strengths in engineering design and project management with an increasing emphasis on the non-engineering discipline areas such as:

• health; and 
• environmental management.

This shift in project philosophy is reflected in the skills and training of the present day SMEC staff and their consultative, multi-disciplinary approach to project management.

SMEC has implemented projects in Australia, South East Asia, Africa and the Pacific Region. Project components have ranged from pre-feasibility studies through to construction and commissioning. Most projects have included training programs, operations and maintenance planning, institutional development, community interaction and socio-economic appreciation.
