Associated with its significant expertise in hydropower engineering SMEC has available in-house specialists with experience in design and construction supervision of tunnels, shafts and underground structures for projects in a wider range of sectors including:

  • hydro-electric power 
  • rail 
  • road 
  • water supply 
  • sewerage 
  • drainage 
  • irrigation and 
  • mining.

In addition to this in-house expertise SMEC has from time to time utilised associations with other organisations and specialists for services in tunnels and underground engineering.

Projects undertaken by SMEC in this field include:

  • Elgas Underground LPG Storage Facility, Sydney construction supervision of the excavation of four caverns 300 m long, 15 m wide and 11 m high; the caverns are accessed by a 140 m deep sharft
  • Perth Sewer Tunnel, Western Australia design, preparation of tender documents and construction supervision of a replacement tunnel 1 km long and 2.2 m in diameter for Perth's Main Sewer, including lining with corrosion resistant lining and backfill grouting
